What Are Implant-Supported Bridges?
Implant-supported bridges are dental restorations designed to replace multiple missing teeth. They consist of a bridge (a custom-made prosthetic with artificial teeth) anchored to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone. This innovative solution offers a permanent, stable alternative to traditional bridges or removable dentures.
Unlike traditional bridges, which require crowning healthy adjacent teeth, implant-supported dental bridges stand independently, preserving your natural teeth and promoting long-term oral health. They’re ideal for patients missing two or more consecutive teeth who want a fixed, non-removable solution.
Types of Implant Bridges
- Fixed implant-supported bridge: A type of bridge that’s permanently attached to dental implants. It can’t be removed by the patient and is designed to function and feel like natural teeth.
- Full arch implant-supported bridge: This type of bridge is used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth in the upper and lower jaw. It’s anchored to several dental implants and is a good option for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth in one arch.
- Partial arch implant-supported bridge: A dental bridge used to replace several teeth in a row. It’s anchored to two or more dental implants and can be used to replace a small section of lost teeth.
- Hybrid implant-supported bridge: Combines the benefits of a fixed and removable bridge. It’s designed to be permanently attached to the implants but can be removed by the dentist for maintenance and cleaning.
Implant-Supported Bridge Benefits
Benefits of an implant-supported bridge include:
- Provides a permanent restoration solution to missing teeth
- Doesn’t rely on the support of other adjacent teeth, which means it doesn’t put additional stress on healthy teeth
- Can prevent further tooth loss
- Looks and feels like natural teeth
- Restores a patient’s ability to eat and speak normally
- Patients can achieve a natural appearance and a boost in self-confidence

The Implant-Supported Bridge Procedure
First Visit
Our Wakefield dentist will evaluate your oral health, take X-rays, and possibly a 3D CT scan to assess your jawbone density and structure. They’ll discuss your goals, medical history, and whether you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
We’ll create a personalized treatment plan, determining the number of implants needed (typically 2 to 4 per bridge) and the bridge design. They’ll explain the timeline, costs, and any preparatory procedures, like bone grafting, if required.
Placing Dental Implants and Osseointegration
During dental implant surgery, titanium implants are placed into your jawbone under local anesthesia or sedation. The implants act as artificial tooth roots. This step takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the number of implants.
Over the next 3 to 6 months, the dental implants fuse with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. You may receive a temporary restoration to maintain aesthetics and function during this period.
Dental Bridge Fabrication and Placement
Once the implants are fully integrated, our dentist takes impressions to create a custom bridge. The bridge is then securely attached to the implants, ensuring a perfect fit and natural appearance. We’ll schedule follow-ups to monitor your implants and bridge.
Are You a Candidate for Implant-Supported Bridges?
We’ll determine your candidacy for implant bridges based on the following:
- Missing two or more consecutive teeth.
- Good overall health, with no uncontrolled medical conditions (like diabetes).
- Sufficient jawbone density to support implants.
- Healthy gums, free of periodontal disease.
- Non-smokers or those willing to quit during the healing process.

How Much Does an Implant Bridge Cost?
The cost of implant-supported bridges varies based on several factors, including location, dentist expertise, number of implants, and materials used. On average, expect to pay $5,000 to $15,000 per bridge, including implants and prosthetics.
Dental insurance may cover part of the procedure, especially if it’s deemed medically necessary. Many dental offices offer financing plans or payment options to make treatment affordable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many teeth can an implant bridge replace?
In general, an implant bridge can replace anywhere from two to six missing teeth in a row. If a patient has more than six missing teeth in a row, multiple dental implant-supported bridges or other tooth replacement options may be needed to fully restore their smile.
How do implant-supported bridges compare to dentures?
Implant-supported bridges are fixed, non-removable, and more stable than dentures, which can slip or require adhesives. They also preserve jawbone health, unlike dentures.
Can I replace an existing bridge with an implant-supported one?
Yes, if you have a traditional bridge and sufficient bone, you may be eligible for an implant-supported bridge. Your dentist will assess your situation.
